Unit Question

Having a lack of recourses can really affect the economy. The country wouldn't be able to make or sell that many goods so the country won't make that much money and that will lead to not many jobs, rapid urbanization, and the citizens won't be protected. Rapid urbanization i think can lead to bad things. More people might be living on the streets or in shanty towns without a job, running water, no health care, and the pollution can really hurt their body. Rapid urbanization can also hurt the environment by cutting down trees to make new homes etc.

Demographics

Ethan here, I've researched some useful demographics.
Demographic Terms

United States in the 1920’s
Population – 106,461,000
Life Expectancy – 59.10
Literacy Rate – 94%
Per Capita Income - $6000
Infant Mortality Rate – 135
Urban Area – 51.2%

Reasons for leaving the rural areas

Hi, Ethan here again. This is me writing to you about why he left San Gabriel in the first place. While I was reading it seemed as if his hometown was a pretty decent rural place, but then did I realize truly why he left. He left mainly because of the lack of food (famine)/ crop failure, lack of services such as hospitals, not a lot of work and pay, and droughts (which of course would lead back to crop failure. I am guessing he left to New York to send money to support his family back home. He might of gone to New York because of readily available jobs, quality education, medical care, the chances of prosperity, etc.

The Future

Hello, this is Davis. What lies in the future? I think that's a huge question. What will I be doing in a few years? Well first of all, I'm going to get a better house and maybe some comforts. I'll probably find a wife and continue the Sojourner family tree with some children.  Esperanza will always be my friend. I think I could bring over my family if I save enough money. The article I write is gaining popularity. It will make me a rich man. Funny, before I came I thought that after you immigrate you arive in a shining city, paved in gold. I thought that money would pour into your hands, that you everyone was rich. I thought that I could live in a big fancy house after a few months. I was wrong. Surviving in the city takes hard work especially since there's always another poor man waiting to take your job. It's like surviving in the jungle. The strongest or cleverest animal always wins.

My Opinion of it All

Hello everybody, this is Ethan. There is an ongoing debate of urban vs. rural life styles, and I think I should put in my own thoughts with the help of the journal of Davis. Obviously, the urban areas are more luxurious and prosperous with technology and tools to make life easy. Unfortunately, there is a giant imbalance of population, and this has led to pollution and other problems. You could say that all the technological advancements are building walls between people, and instead of having a real conversation people are busy updating their Facebook profile or something. Urban areas on the other hand, though deprived of luxury, is more peaceful, kind, and a slow life. The nature all around is beautiful, and there isn't as much pollution. It all comes down to your own which one is better because the rural areas could be named as "boring". I think that we just need to strike a perfect balance of rural and urban, but for now the urban areas offer more opportunities so the urban areas can be better if not over crowded too badly. Is the urban always better though? No, and even though rural areas are poor because of the lack of resources, the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Recreation

Hello, this is Ethan again. I am trying to recreate a scene from Davis' audio journal. I hope to be able to present it to you very soon. In the mean time, here is another journal entry.

Why He Came to America

This is Ethan and I have figured out why Davis move to America. In his journal and audio recorder he wrote that there were many reasons that he immigrated but, many of the things he emphasized is that he came to New York because of the prosperity. He loved the creature comforts that came from hard work, and he could work hard. The feeling of risk-reward that came of the stock market excited him. He had powerful friends and like to be in the center of the action. He wanted to escape from poverty. Sojourner liked the feeling of money, though not much, in his pocket.

Family

Davis Journal 2- I am in my room (if a couch can be counted as a room) crying for my family. The sting of tears is almost too much to bear. My mother died from malaria and so my dad was my comforter. My sister, Ariana , was my childhood friend for the other children teased me for my short size. Sophia, mother of Esperanza, was a great friend before she died a peaceful death. All of them were wonderful people, and I have yet to mention all my uncles and aunts and cousins.

Ethan

I am Ethan Ashes. I'm a construction worker who found a journal belonging to a certain Davis Sojourner who was an immigrant from San Gabriel, Mexico to New York in the 1920's. The last post was his first entry. I hope to decypher the rest of the journal soon (his handwriting is messy).

Hello World

Hello, my name is Davis Sojourner. I came to New York with hopes of riches from San Gabriel, Mexico, a poor place with only 898 households and a population of 3,900, with just some pocket money. I live in a trashy, dirty apartment with my golden retriever, Esperanza, who is named after the Spanish word for "hope". My cousin, Marcus, convinced me to immigrate to America. I came in a dilapidated boat with several other people. I want this trip to turn out well, but it's hard when you are a toy seller.

Wish me luck, Davis.
